the cutlery project – works by koichi futatsumata & studio wieki somers

koichi futatsumataA design label called valerie_objects (yep, lowercase and underscore in the name) have started a design project collaborating with studios around the world.  “the cutlery project” (still lowercase) features the works shown here by Koichi Futatsumata (above) & Studio Wieki Somers (below). Their mandate was “A prototype set of tools to eat with. Spoons, forks and knives.”

The designs of Maarten Baas and Koichi Futatsumata so far are the only sets in production the rest being prototypes. The designs use plastic, metal and what seems to be paper. These are some gorgeous pieces of work that really push the concept of traditional flatware.

The Perfect Butter Knife?

The Perfect Butter KnifeWe have covered previously what was claimed to be the World’s Best Butter Knife. Now we have available for sale from Color Cuisine what they are calling The Perfect Butter Knife. So what makes it so perfect? Here’s what they have to say:

  • NO MORE TORN BREAD! The only butter grating spreader that actually works on cold butter right out of the fridge. No more long waits for your butter to warm up, or tearing your toast from trying to spread it cold.
  • THE END OF FUNKY BUTTER! The knife like holes turn butter into thin strands that heat up quickly and spread effortlessly. Don’t let your butter spoil from storing it on the counter anymore.
  • EASY ENOUGH FOR KIDS! Holding the spreader flat produces long tasty strips while holding at an angle creates beautiful curls. Use it to give extra flair to cheese as well.
  • SHARP WHERE YOU WANT IT! The beveled cut-outs give the holes a perfect cutting edge and also make it a breeze to clean.
  • SATISFACTION GUARANTEED! Made from food-grade 18/8 stainless steel, this tool is safe for the dishwasher and you never have to worry about it rusting.

Those are some pretty big cutlery claims, but over at Amazon the reviews are pretty good. I’ll let you decide for yourself. As for me, I don’t like butter on my bread, Nutella on the other hand…

Cutlery Coat Hooks

cutlery coat hooksMy wonderful wife sent me this picture and I have no idea where it came from. Anyone got a photo credit for this?

It is a great idea to turn old forks into cutlery coat hooks. I like that it could not only hold coats but if you bent out the fork tines a little they could hold car keys or hats as well. Maybe spoons would work better for hats, don’t want to stab yourself on a fork tine.

All you need is some old cast cutlery (not stamped) and a hammer and drill. Fun weekend project that I will have to try.

Oprah Winfrey favorite list for 2015 includes Knork Flatware

KNORK Titanium 5 Piece Flatware SetEvery year Oprah Winfrey has her list of favorites and this year it includes the interestingly designed flatware from Knork. We have looked at Knorf’s Knife and Fork combo in a past post, and it’s seems they have dropped focus on the gimmick for a more robust product.

The KNORK Titanium 5 Piece Flatware Set as shown above is using the strength of their patented design. This hand forged service for one consists of a dinner Knork, a dinner Knife, a salad Knork, a teaspoon, and a tablespoon Dinner fork.

They claim to be dishwasher safe but ask you don’t use lemon or citrus scented detergent. I’m assuming they are concerned the citric acid could remove the titanium coated finish.

I have to say it looks great and black cutlery really is becoming very popular.
