Measuring Spoons that last

measuring spoon

OK, I broke another measuring spoon. That’s the fourth set in recent memory. I’ve been buying both metal and plastic and am sad to say they are from the Dollar Store. The plastic breaks and the metal bends or rusts. And sometimes they just get lost for which I blame the cat.

I used to travel a great deal and found myself replacing my luggage all the time because the airlines would destroy it. I finally asked a flight attendant for advice and she said spend $600 now on a travel case and never spend again or $60 every six months for the rest of your life. This rule applies to measuring spoons it seems, but at a lot lower cost.

These five stainless steel spoons come in 1/4 tsp, 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 1/2 Tbls, 1 Tbls sizes. Thanks to magnets they “spoon” together while stored to avoid the cat stealing one (what does he do with the things?). The rounded ends are for liquids and the narrow end to fit into spice bottles and being doubled ended works well for wet/dry mixing. Dishwasher safe and designed to sit flat on the counter to avoid spillage. They are not $600 and probably the final set of measuring spoon cutlery you’ll need to buy.

Nutella Spreader or Knife Spreader?

This “Nutella Stretcher” picture has been racing around the Internet the last few days. It claims to be the perfect knife for emptying the jar and spreading Nutella. A Google search shows that this is a myth in North America and was a promotional item in Europe. A even better piece of cutlery that isn’t promotional branding and uni-purpose is this:

spreader knife

It is a ultimate sandwich knife and more. With 5-inch serrated spreader blade that will spread as well as cut where needed. It’s made of stamped high-carbon steel with a stainless alloy coating (I wouldn’t put it in the dishwasher). It is 10 by 2 inches with a plastic handle. It’s made by Germans and lasers, like Kraftwerk!

Everyday doesn’t have to be so serious. But it should include a cutlery reference none the less.

The Egg Spoon – For the perfect soft boiled egg

egg spoon

Nothing like a properly soft boiled egg and toast soldiers for breakfast.

And what makes eating that egg in a special egg cup is the very special egg spoon. The egg spoon has a shorter handle and a round and wide tip for getting into the shell and scooping out that delicious eggy-wegg at the very bottom. A normal teaspoon is usually too wide in the bowl and not delicate enough for this procedure. It’s all about the right tool for the right job. Now we do preach here at TheCutleryReview.com that you should not have “single purpose tools” in your kitchen and we have found the egg spoon works well for another use. Funnily enough that includes eggs as well, sort of. They make pretty good caviar spoons as well.
