Mother of Pearl Caviar Spoons

mother of pearl spoonMother’s Day is coming up and this cutlery caviar spoon came to mind. According to Wikipedia:

“There is a custom that caviar should not be served with a metal spoon, because metal may impart an undesirable flavour. Some food experts point out that caviar is stored and sold in metal tins, and therefore any effect of metal on caviar flavour is a misconception; however, others point out that silver is reactive, and may affect caviar flavour.”

Those metal tins these days are lined with a protective layer so I’m still a believer that a metal spoon can ruin the caviar experience. Even if it’s just the mouth feel of metal that is a factor.

But either way, call your Mom. And go out and get some champagne and caviar and treat her. She raised you and put up with you, she deserves a treat.

“Giro” – Twisted Cutlery from Italy

giro cutlery“Giro” is from the Italian word for “turn” and is the driving thought behind this concept cutlery from UNStudio.

This flatware with a twist in the design affects how the cutlery is turned in your hand when finding the best position for use.

From their site:

“In the Giro cutlery set a twist originates from the point where the handle transforms into blade and graduates along the length of the utensils. A three finger concept for the holding and balance of the cutlery has been adopted in the design. The weight of the cutlery transfers from the lifting position to the position when in use, thereby supporting and balancing the utensils in both situations.”

The Giro cutlery family will consist of the following items: Tablespoon, Fork, Knife, Dessert fork, Dessert knife, Pastry fork, Coffee spoon,Teaspoon, Serving Spoon, Serving fork, Salad set, and Cake server.

Sadly still a concept and not for sale.

Color Changing Spoons

color changing spoonColorful cutlery that changes right before you! The magic spoon your party needs.

These 2 packages of plastic (BPA free) spoons will change color with the temperature of the food you use them with. Be warned they are lightweight plastic, so not really made for hard ice cream. But cold soft ice cream, yogurt or puddings and you will have some fun.

There are 12 spoons per package and they are reusable and dishwasher safe but the top rack only. The hot water in a dishwasher might mess with them a bit.

The disclaimer: Color change will vary depending on temperature, lighting, and perception of color. Color change is due to temperature change. The warmer it is… the lighter the color. The colder it is… the bolder the color.
