the cutlery project – works by koichi futatsumata & studio wieki somers

koichi futatsumataA design label called valerie_objects (yep, lowercase and underscore in the name) have started a design project collaborating with studios around the world.  “the cutlery project” (still lowercase) features the works shown here by Koichi Futatsumata (above) & Studio Wieki Somers (below). Their mandate was “A prototype set of tools to eat with. Spoons, forks and knives.”

The designs of Maarten Baas and Koichi Futatsumata so far are the only sets in production the rest being prototypes. The designs use plastic, metal and what seems to be paper. These are some gorgeous pieces of work that really push the concept of traditional flatware.

Copper Cutlery is Cool

Hampton Forge Essenstahl Paris Titan 20-Piece Flatware SetAccording to an article at the Huffington Post, copper cutlery is the cool flatware for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. There is even the claim made by Pinterest that it’s one of the most popular metallic colors of 2015.

Copper flatware and fall colors do make sense to us and we found this great hammered look copper cutlery by Hampton Forge. The Essenstahl Paris Titan 20-Piece set is made from dishwasher-safe 18/0 stainless steel with a 25-year warranty. It is a copper titanium-plating so I would hand wash to be safe. This set includes 4 dinner forks, 4 dinner knives, 4 dinner spoons, 4 salad forks and 4 teaspoons.

A Tribute to “The Silver Spoon” by Inga Sempé

Inga Sempé alessis spoonInga Sempé is an amazing designer of cutlery who has created the Collo Alto set of flatware as a tribute to the famous cookbook “The Silver Spoon”. The design is centered around a circle or balloon shape. They are rather pricey but available at Alessi.com, and there is a great article with more photos over at Fast Company Design. I like the shovel spoon myself, it stands out from the crowd.

The Silver Spoon

What interested me even more is the book they pay tribute to. “The Silver Spoon” originally published in 1950 is considered the most influential and bestselling Italian cookbook of the last 50 years. It’s been updated as of 2011 with new color photos and it looks amazing.
