Stainless Kung Foon Utensil – Spork meets Chopsticks

kung foonHow strong is your Kung Foon my friend? An interesting name for an interesting product. This is truly “spork meets chopsticks” to create a lightweight portable multi-function utensil.

Your chopsticks simply slide into the Foon’s handle making the perfect piece of cutlery to reach the bottom of a rehydrated food pouch or to stir a pot. Because it’s a spork you have the function of spoon and fork as well. It is made of stainless steel and comes in a steel gift carrying tin with a set of plastic chopsticks.

Perfect for the camping trips or in your bag for lunches at work.

CEK-40 Electric Knife by Cuisinart

electric knifeThe Electric Knife is one of the few “automated” pieces of cutlery in the kitchen that makes sense. The electric fork for twirling spaghetti is a comedic disaster. A nice thing about the Electric Knife is that it is a kitchen multi-tasker.  It can be used for carving the Thanksgiving Day turkey, slicing home-made bread, filleting fish, and even cutting foam for new cushions.

This model CEK-40 from Cuisinart has stainless steel blades (one for bread and one for carving) and has an nice wooden stand for storage. It’s powered by a plug-in-the-wall 120 Volt motor so that means more power and no fussing with charging batteries (stay away from wireless when buying something like this). Ergonomic design with safety switch and it works for left or right handers (I’m a lefty and am grateful).

It’s a great deal and that first morning you use it to slice a bagel you see why it’s handy.

Travel Cutlery or Portable Carry Cutlery?

travel_cutlery

It was an outdoor picnic at work and we served potato salad, barbequed steak and chicken.  A lovely sunshiny day where we all sat on the grass with cold drinks in hand and styrofoam plates full of good food. As I went to sit amongst my co-workers I noticed I had to pick my seat on the ground carefully as there were little burial mounds of broken dead plastic cutlery.

In case I haven’t already said it enough, I hate plastic cutlery. I’ve certainly already reviewed various types of portable carry cutlery (I think I just invented a new industry term). We’ve looked a sporks for yogurt at the office and camping utensils as well. But where these two different sets would come in the handiest is at the company picnic or even better…the dreaded food court (where all bad plastic cutlery lives).

Now I will admit to have been given a few strange looks when using my own cutlery at the food court but when they see them in action the look becomes admiration. A quick wash in the bathroom sink after use (and then brush your teeth young man!) and all good. We’ll review the wood versus metal chopstick situation at a later date.

Halloween Pumpkin Carving Tools

318Nq1keQoLIt’s that time of year again to carve pumpkins into scary shapes and faces. In our house it was done with a fish filleting knife that no child should have their gourd guts covered mitts on. Wired’s Gadget Lab goes almost Steampunk with their choice to review this brass and walnut handled carving set. It’s a little over the top but they make a good point that after Halloween it can be used for more than just pumpkins.
