Here’s my story about my story:
One of my two most favourite films of all time is The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) with the all star cast of Peter Weller, Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow and Jeff Goldblum. My other favorite (they are tied for top place) is Big Night (1996) with the amazing Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub.
The science fiction docu-film about Buckaroo Banzai I first watched from my parent’s satellite dish as a young teen. I’ve seen it well over one hundred times, know every line of dialog, have all the collector’s merchandise (even the ViewMaster reels) and many friends have rightly claimed that I based my persona and career path on the titular Buckaroo who “began life as he was destined to live it…going in several directions at once.”.
Big Night I saw on cable TV in my late twenties when I was just discovering the world of cooking. I own two copies on DVD, the novelized version and a printed copy of the original screenplay. I’ve seen it less than one hundred times but more than fifty. I quote the movie constantly to the annoyance of my wife.
In 1996 a young gentleman named Ernest Cline wrote a fan fiction sequel he called The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Against The World Crime. He released it into the wild on the internet to great acclaim and attention. But a movie never happened. But he persevered and used this fame to build a career in Hollywood writing scripts and ultimately had his first book Ready Player One filmed and directed by the one and only Steven Spielberg.
One day in 2019 I decided I want to read and hopefully one day see a sequel to Big Night. So I read every screenplay writing book I could find, researched the hell out of the original film’s story and characters and wrote this. I wrote this for myself, I wrote it for all the other fans of the film, I wrote it for all the chefs and creatives out there and I wrote it for Tony Bourdain.
