Nutella Spreader Revisited – Part 1- The Zyliss Sandwich Knife

My post about the Nutella Spreader from last year generated the most interest by far on this blog. At the time I did some research to find that the Nutella branded knife wasn’t easily available and suggested an alternative. Well it seems people want a different and more suitable knife. Many people had many different reasons they liked the Nutella Spreader so I’ve done some extensive research and will be presenting my findings in 3 parts.

zyliss sandwich knifeThe first today is sticking to a standard steel traditional sandwich knife. The Zyliss Sandwich Knife has a serrated stainless steel blade for cutting and an oval shaped blade for Nutella or other tasty delights that need spreading on your bread. The design fits the inside of the jar nicely. It has a soft touch yellow plastic ergonomic handle which is non-slip. It isn’t stainless steel and probably not very dishwasher friendly but a great cutlery multi-tasker in the kitchen.

Microplane Zester Grater

microplan zester graterThe famous Alton Brown introduced me to this amazing device and I can never have a proper kitchen setup without one again. It’s fits his rule of not being a “one use” kitchen tool as this thing can zest lemons, grate chocolate, shred ginger or what ever you can imagine. It can also take the skin off of your fingers pretty quick.

It’s made of 18/8 stainless steel and isn’t something you’ll need to sharpen. The blade is 8-1/2-inches long with an ergonomic black plastic handle. It’s of course dishwasher safe but make sure to hand wash the cover as it will melt in the dishwasher heat. And please make sure to use the cover when you leave it in the cutlery drawer, it will stay sharp and less likely to bite your fingers while rummaging!

Expandable Cutlery Drawer Tray Organizer

bamboo cultery trayMoving into a new house or apartment always leads to a problem, what drawer does the cutlery fit into? Close to the stove? Close to the fridge? And then the dreaded problem…will my cutlery tray organizer fit into this drawer. My current tray of flatware had to have a hacksaw taken to it to make it fit. That type of frustration surely led to this product.

The Bellemain Bamboo Expandable Cutlery Drawer Organizer expands from 12.75″ to 17.5″ wide and it’s  18″ long and 2″ high. So go measure your drawer and see if you fit in the 12.75 to 17.5 inch range. When fully expanded it has 8 compartments for cutlery and 6 when closed. The bamboo construction is hardy and eco-friendly.

Flatware Chest

flatware chestChoosing a flatware chest for your silverware can become a long and involved discussion about function over form. That is to say, which is more important? Should it look good? Or should it perform well? Can you have both? Many questions and a long argument in the department store ensues…

This single drawer flatware chest seems to be a nice balance of storing your cutlery and looking good. It holds a full service for 12 with room for additional pieces like serving utensils. It’s made with a nice dark walnut finish (note that they say finish, not made of actual walnut) and has brushed nickel handles. The handles are the main feature for me, carrying a large wooden box of silverware around is not easy as not everyone has a sideboard for easy access for a silverware chest.

In my opinion this is a good balance of function, form and price.
