Measuring Spoons that last

measuring spoon

OK, I broke another measuring spoon. That’s the fourth set in recent memory. I’ve been buying both metal and plastic and am sad to say they are from the Dollar Store. The plastic breaks and the metal bends or rusts. And sometimes they just get lost for which I blame the cat.

I used to travel a great deal and found myself replacing my luggage all the time because the airlines would destroy it. I finally asked a flight attendant for advice and she said spend $600 now on a travel case and never spend again or $60 every six months for the rest of your life. This rule applies to measuring spoons it seems, but at a lot lower cost.

These five stainless steel spoons come in 1/4 tsp, 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 1/2 Tbls, 1 Tbls sizes. Thanks to magnets they “spoon” together while stored to avoid the cat stealing one (what does he do with the things?). The rounded ends are for liquids and the narrow end to fit into spice bottles and being doubled ended works well for wet/dry mixing. Dishwasher safe and designed to sit flat on the counter to avoid spillage. They are not $600 and probably the final set of measuring spoon cutlery you’ll need to buy.

The Egg Spoon – For the perfect soft boiled egg

egg spoon

Nothing like a properly soft boiled egg and toast soldiers for breakfast.

And what makes eating that egg in a special egg cup is the very special egg spoon. The egg spoon has a shorter handle and a round and wide tip for getting into the shell and scooping out that delicious eggy-wegg at the very bottom. A normal teaspoon is usually too wide in the bowl and not delicate enough for this procedure. It’s all about the right tool for the right job. Now we do preach here at TheCutleryReview.com that you should not have “single purpose tools” in your kitchen and we have found the egg spoon works well for another use. Funnily enough that includes eggs as well, sort of. They make pretty good caviar spoons as well.

Cake and Pie serving cutlery – For Christmas

cake serverCreating the perfect pie is an art. I spent a few days in training with a Master Baker from the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) and as a result I really have learned to appreciate what it takes to make a perfect crust. I can’t make a pie, what did you expect I only had a few days.

When you ask someone to describe “pie shaped” they usually describe a perfect triangle with a curved side. Not a crumbled mess on a plate. Trying to serve pie or cake for that matter without the proper tools results in the destruction of your hard work.

This 2-piece cake and pie serving set from Towle is themed for the Christmas holiday. It has a cake knife that is topped with a candy cane and a server with a snowman. Make sure to hand wash to avoid corrosion or losing the silver alloy plating. And don’t let your pie be destroyed by trying to use a fork and knife made for carving the turkey!

CEK-40 Electric Knife by Cuisinart

electric knifeThe Electric Knife is one of the few “automated” pieces of cutlery in the kitchen that makes sense. The electric fork for twirling spaghetti is a comedic disaster. A nice thing about the Electric Knife is that it is a kitchen multi-tasker.  It can be used for carving the Thanksgiving Day turkey, slicing home-made bread, filleting fish, and even cutting foam for new cushions.

This model CEK-40 from Cuisinart has stainless steel blades (one for bread and one for carving) and has an nice wooden stand for storage. It’s powered by a plug-in-the-wall 120 Volt motor so that means more power and no fussing with charging batteries (stay away from wireless when buying something like this). Ergonomic design with safety switch and it works for left or right handers (I’m a lefty and am grateful).

It’s a great deal and that first morning you use it to slice a bagel you see why it’s handy.
