Calamente Fork – For Twirling Spaghetti or Ramen

http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/10/21/the-calamente-fork-f.html

I’ll admit to living off of Ichiban cup-o-noodles (or the brick-o-noodles) in college. I have to further admit that it is still my go-to meal at work when I’ve forgotten lunch, am too lazy to go out, or just don’t have any time for anything more.

The Calamente Fork that I first read about over at my fave site BoingBoing is a Japanese product that is made for picking up noodles (ramen or spaghetti) and twirling effectively.  The design on this piece of cutlery is elegant and more of a single use tool and conversation piece than anything.  But clever none the less.

Plastic Silverware

plastic silverwareLook again at the picture, that is not real silverware, it’s plastic. It looks amazing, holds up very well compared to the white plastic fork you are used to, doesn’t have the weight of the real thing but two out of three ain’t bad.

Of course it isn’t dishwasher safe as that is neither hygienic nor will it survive the wash (the coating will delaminate).  Yes, that makes it disposable and not something we should do everyday (look at recyclable cutlery here) but for special events like a a big Christmas or New Year dinner this is just perfect.

The 160-pc set includes 40 forks (plus a bonus 40), spoons and knives. The price compared to washing the real thing or even renting from a catering company just can’t compare. And if someone steals a spoon, you won’t mind at all…

Guyot Designs 5 in 1 Microbite Set – A Tiny Travel Set

guyot microbite

It amazes me how often what is great camping gear is also great for the urban setting. The number of picnics (planned or not) or meals at amusement parks where I’ve been able to pull out a good set of Everyday Carry Cutlery is amazing. And every single time I get a look of “what is with this freak?” and then the light goes on and they watch me happily enjoy my meal.

This mini-utensil set has a very sturdy spork and knife. BPA free and reclaimable nylon and 2% of their sales go to support environmental action charities. The 5 in 1? I can count #1 knife, #2 fork, #3 spoon, #4 spatula and #5 ummm?

Chinese Soup Spoons – A classic every kitchen should have

chinese soup spoonIf you don’t already have these, please get them, and please don’t steal them from the local restaurant. These spoons are classic and timeless but more importantly they are an amazing multi-use piece of cutlery. From the obvious for soup to a great way to serve an Amuse-bouche. Or even setting up spices and condiments for serving or Mise en place. OK, so I’ve been watching a lot of french cooking shows lately 🙂

Made of rugged dishwasher safe Melamine (don’t worry it’s safe) and heat resistant to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. These things last forever and are always handy.
