Backpack Cutlery – Ozark Trail Hobo Tool – 7-in-1

Ozark Trail Hobo Tool-7-in-1

Summertime and backpacks and picnics and hikes and quick meals. We were tramping around Napa last year and found for our impromptu picnics that we needed something other than our hands or plastic cutlery. I’m calling it Backpack Cutlery.

I picked this up after the fact and so far this summer it’s proving to be pretty handy. Ozark Trail’s Hobo Tool – 7-in-1 utensil set isn’t a high priced item and if you lose it you won’t pull your hair out over it.

It separates into two handles that include a fork, bottle opener and corkscrew (important for Napa!) on one side and a spoon and knife on the other. It’s made of stainless steel and the knife will need some sharpening to get an edge on it. It’s has a ring on it to clip onto your backpack so you don’t lose it. But I’d buy two either way as someone will borrow it “permanently” I’m certain.

Roman “Swiss Army Knife” – Everyday Carry Cutlery

Roman Swiss Army KnifeThis piece of “Everyday Carry Cutlery” could be considered the first “Swiss Army Knife”. Dating from A.D. 201 to A.D. 300 or so, this 3″ x 6″ knife includes a spoon, knife, toothpick, fork, spike and spatula. It is possible Roman soldiers would carry into the battlefield and to the dinner table, no one is certain of who used them.

The one in the image is a little old and rusted. Checkout the link below to see some others that are in better shape.

Keychain Cutlery

keychain cutleryI’m a big fan of “Everyday Carry Cutlery” and have to resist many items I see available online these days. But this new piece of Keychain Cutlery from Pro-Idee Concept Store is very interesting indeed.

An interlocking knife, fork and spoon are conveniently hidden inside the 5 1⁄2″ key fob (about the size of an egg). Also included is a metal bottle opener. The cutlery is made of stainless steel, the bottle opener is zinc and the case black plastic. It comes with a handy travel strap. One catch is that it’s a little pricy at around $50 for a pair, but pretty cool looking.

Sink Mounted Cutlery Cleaner

cutlery cleaner

How many times have I had to type the words “not dishwasher safe” in this blog? Too many. But here is a handy little gadget to help with the hand washing.

This cutlery cleaner uses suction cups to attach to the side of your sink and non-scratch bristles to cleanup that dirty cutlery. Kind of works like a golf ball washer. There has been complaints that the suction cups don’t stick well or hold up to the action of running the cutlery through it. The trick I’ve found in these situations (especially with stainless steel sinks) is to make sure the sink is very clean and then attach the suction cup with a little dish soap and then let dry over night. Works like a charm.
