Nutella Spreader or Knife Spreader?

This “Nutella Stretcher” picture has been racing around the Internet the last few days. It claims to be the perfect knife for emptying the jar and spreading Nutella. A Google search shows that this is a myth in North America and was a promotional item in Europe. A even better piece of cutlery that isn’t promotional branding and uni-purpose is this:

spreader knife

It is a ultimate sandwich knife and more. With 5-inch serrated spreader blade that will spread as well as cut where needed. It’s made of stamped high-carbon steel with a stainless alloy coating (I wouldn’t put it in the dishwasher). It is 10 by 2 inches with a plastic handle. It’s made by Germans and lasers, like Kraftwerk!

Fornuft Casual Flatware Silverware

fornuft flatwareThis is flatware in the truest sense. It is a 20 piece set with fork, knife, spoon and dessert spoon and the design is from stamped stainless steel.  A great set with a great value.

“Fornuft” is a silly name for a flatware set I said to myself. A little googling and looking closely at the photo shows that this is an Ikea product. “Fornuft” translates into “reason” which I guess fits considering this is a reasonable flatware set.

If you can’t get to Ikea you can always get it from Amazon:

Rada Cutlery – Starter Knife Gift Set

rada cutleryWe’ve been given this set as a gift, twice. So that must mean something. And I’ve noticed these pieces in many a drawer and dishwasher. Which brings me to my first point about this start cutlery set by Rada: Don’t put in the dishwasher! The steel for the blades are wonderfully super sharp, hold an edge, and quite flexible. But the silver brushed handles are made of aluminum (which makes a nice non-slip grip) and that aluminum will tarnish and pit if you put it in the dishwasher.

The set contains a regular paring knife, vegetable peeler, tomato slicer, long parer, 6″ bread knife, cook’s knife, and a slicer. It does make a great gift for the student or someone who never has a decent knife in the house when you visit.

Travel Cutlery or Portable Carry Cutlery?

travel_cutlery

It was an outdoor picnic at work and we served potato salad, barbequed steak and chicken.  A lovely sunshiny day where we all sat on the grass with cold drinks in hand and styrofoam plates full of good food. As I went to sit amongst my co-workers I noticed I had to pick my seat on the ground carefully as there were little burial mounds of broken dead plastic cutlery.

In case I haven’t already said it enough, I hate plastic cutlery. I’ve certainly already reviewed various types of portable carry cutlery (I think I just invented a new industry term). We’ve looked a sporks for yogurt at the office and camping utensils as well. But where these two different sets would come in the handiest is at the company picnic or even better…the dreaded food court (where all bad plastic cutlery lives).

Now I will admit to have been given a few strange looks when using my own cutlery at the food court but when they see them in action the look becomes admiration. A quick wash in the bathroom sink after use (and then brush your teeth young man!) and all good. We’ll review the wood versus metal chopstick situation at a later date.
