A Tribute to “The Silver Spoon” by Inga Sempé

Inga Sempé alessis spoonInga Sempé is an amazing designer of cutlery who has created the Collo Alto set of flatware as a tribute to the famous cookbook “The Silver Spoon”. The design is centered around a circle or balloon shape. They are rather pricey but available at Alessi.com, and there is a great article with more photos over at Fast Company Design. I like the shovel spoon myself, it stands out from the crowd.

The Silver Spoon

What interested me even more is the book they pay tribute to. “The Silver Spoon” originally published in 1950 is considered the most influential and bestselling Italian cookbook of the last 50 years. It’s been updated as of 2011 with new color photos and it looks amazing.

Spoon Art – Motorcycle by James Rice

spoon motorcycleOK, time for a fun Friday before a long weekend post. Someone sent me this photo of amazing piece of cultural cutlery art. An amazing artist spent a lot of time bending these spoons into an detailed motorcycle artwork piece. Anyone know who did this? I’d really love to give them credit for this flatware find. Let us know in the comments.

Update from reader Jeny:

I know who made the spoon motorcycle! My husband, James Rice, makes them. This is #5 of 7 that he’s finished so far. I made a Facebook page, Everlasting Spoonful, where I share about him, and his work. This month, that sculpture, called “The Wasp” is on display at the Washington State Fair, in the Fine Art Show! He also has another, which took 4th place in sculpture called “The Bagger”. Very cool that you were shown his work, and I hope you find us on Facebook! Thank you so much for sharing! Jeny

Spoonful of Spoons Video

It’s called the “Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon” when you start noticing something everywhere. Like for instance you write a blog about cutlery and you really like the design of spoons. Then suddenly every single day you start seeing spoons everywhere. It’s a fatal flatware affliction.

Stainless Steel Sugar Skull Tea Spoon

Skull Sugar Spoon
Skull Sugar Spoon

I’ve been watching this product come together since it was announced as a Kickstarter project and now it’s available for public sale.

This cunning cutlery is a stainless steel teaspoon that is shaped as a skull. It means you might need 3 instead of 2 spoons of sugar for your tea, but it is all about form not function. It measures 15 x 3.2 x 1.4 cm and I’d suggest you get two as someone will certainly steal your first one.
