Smelly Fork to enhance the meal?

aromafork by moleculeThey call it the “Aroma R-Evolution” and it’s a smelly fork. OK, not really a smelly dirty fork but a fork that acts as a vehicle to add new aromas to your food delivering them right under your nose. Their product is the “Aromafork” that allows you to present a choice of 21 different aromas with categories such as beans, fruits, herbs, nuts, spice, and my favorite umami.

The idea is to accentuate the taste bud’s experience with even more aroma that can compliment or contrast the taste of your food. They are offering pre-orders now and you really should check out their page to see the mechanics of how this interesting cutlery works.

There is no spoon!

There is no spoonThe image above is from the movie “The Matrix” and is a statement that seems to apply to real life. According to the article from the Daily Mail online, the spoons are disappearing. It seems that 70% of cutlery sets are sold without soup spoons. People are using desert spoons instead (bit of a spelling pun there). What concerns me is the indication it is cost that is driving this “no spoon” movement. Is this a problem or just a trend? Your thoughts?

3D Printed Custom Cutlery from Shapeways

3d printer cutleryOK, this stuff gets me excited. We have finally reached a point in the advancement of 3d printing technology that we can design and have printed custom cutlery designs. There are still limitations in size and definitely in materials. Printing in plastics runs around $7 per piece where as steel can be around $33 a piece. But last year at this time this wasn’t even really a possibility as there were no food safe materials and the size of the piece that could be made was too small.

Shapeways is a service that allows you to upload your 3d designs and have them created or allow others to order your designs to be printed for them. The design above is from lucaCavannaDesign is called 3xone and is very unique with a lot of thought in it’s design. It uses less material (cheaper), is structurally sound and they nest together. Check out their page at Shapeways for more images of this intelligent 3d custom cutlery design.

Gary Hovey Flatware Silverware Sculptures

Gary-Hovey-Flatware-Silverware-SculpturesAs usual we try to find something fun to post on Mondays and this week we barely made it (see the pun I made there? It’s horrible).  Check out this amazing collection of cutlery sculptures by Gary Hovey. From his bio: “Since 2004 Gary Hovey has been sculpting stainless steel forks, knives, and spoons into realistic forms. Favorite subjects are wildlife such as herons, bears, and game fish.”

His Dad searches flea markets for the flatware for his sculptures. That must be boxes and boxes of cutlery!
