Everyday Carry Cutlery – Why we should all carry our own knives and forks

Plastic cutlery
We’ve been posting a bit lately about Everyday Carry Cutlery and we’ve been thinking maybe it’s just us that is that crazy to carry our own flatware around?

Well, we were sent this interesting article by Bee Wilson at TheGuardian.com and it seems to agree with us. A few interesting points:

  • In medieval Europe people would carry their own knife for every eating occasion
  • A forestry group in China urged diners to “carry their own tableware” to avert the ecological disaster caused by disposable chopsticks
  • In both China and Japan a “bring-your-own-chopsticks” (BYOC) movement has sprung up

Everyday Carry Cutlery – humangear Gobites Trio

humangear-GoBites-Travel-TrioWe are big fans around here of Everyday Carry Cutlery. Whether for camping, at school or the office, it sure comes in handy. This set of travel flatware from “humangear” is pretty fancy stuff.

It comes in a very slim and small carrying case and consists of a extended-length spoon, fork, and knife (which they claim actually cuts). But wait there’s more! It also includes a wedge/pointed toothpick. The BPA-free nylon material has a lifetime warranty.

But one last thing, the knife has a metal re-enforced bottle opener as well. Pretty slick.

What is it called? Cutlery, Flatware or Silverware?

flat flatwareAround here we prefer the term cutlery obviously but the discussion continues everyday about what we call those utensils that we use to put food in our mouths. What is it called? Cutlery, Flatware or Silverware? Isn’t Silverware supposed to be made of silver?

The above image is some flattened design flatware by Josef Hoffmann.

A great post at The Grammarphobia Blog talks about what is “flat” about Flatware and the history of the terms that we seem to use interchangeably.

They make them! Eco-Friendly Stainless Steel Spork

Eco-Friendly Stainless Steel SporkWe posted a week or so back about the Kuma Spork Kickstarter project. Well it turns out a very very similar product already exists and is for sale.  The Eco-Friendly Stainless Steel Spork has a slightly different design with longer tines and less color options and maybe a smaller spoon bowl. But I think I like this one a little better, I wish I could do a eating test with both. You will have to decide which is better by the photos like me. This does falls under our category of Everyday Carry Cutlery.

This Eco-Friendly Stainless Steel Spork is  1/4 inches long made of  18/10 stainless steel. Dishwasher safe and Made in China.

PS – Looking at the photo, are the bowls facing up or down? Weird optical illusion 🙂
